WILD FLOWERS!

JULY 10-

We had company for the week and spent most of the time working on the barn. Marilyn, a long time friend from Florida, visited and helped with the siding project. However, we did take several breaks to "stop and admire the wild flowers that are starting to color the yard and meadow!923247-917966-thumbnail.jpg

And, of course, this entry wouldn't be complete without two pictures of the local wild life...923247-917986-thumbnail.jpg

The Big Move!  07-08-07

MOVING THE SHED!!!

Lots of things going on in Brewster Meadows. Our first building project many years ago was a rather nice 12'×18' garden shed. We put in windows, and screens and some of our early guests used it as a guest cottage when we were staying here in summers in our Motor Home. The first winter, before we even decided on a home site we stored the tractor in it along with brush hog, bucket and blade.

Gradually it became a sort of storage shed where we put thing we really didn't mind forgetting about including a collection of hardware, hand tools and some gardening supplies and implements. We decided that we wanted it to be a "garden shed", but good distance to the garden. I do mean good distance. So, we decided that we should move the 12'×18'shed down the road, closer to the garden. We contacted the folks who we got the plans and lumber from and lo and behold, they would move the shed. 923247-908565-thumbnail.jpg

All we had to do was empty it. We found all kinds of good things: rakes, shovels, hoe, shelving, two soaker hoses, hand tools, you get the picture.923247-908570-thumbnail.jpg
The Beginning of the Move

On Monday, July 1, one man from Jamaica Cottage Shop and the rest as they say in history. 923247-908574-thumbnail.jpg
Up, up and away!

Ready to go...
In 1 1/2 hours, he had levered the shed up, and manuevered it on the truck, backed it down the drive and deposited it on the pad that we had prepared for it. 923247-908586-thumbnail.jpg

Then he tipped the truck, and there was our shed, down by the garden. 923247-908590-thumbnail.jpg
Tipped into new home

Now, all we have to do is paint it! Probably green and we'll do some plantings around it.

Birds outside the window

Handsome Visitor!

Things are happening up here. First of all, the bushes that are part of our landscape are a favorite for the birds. We were told that the berries were edible for humans, but the birds seem to be there first. The other morning we looked out the kitchen window and spotted two Cedar Waxwings.

Last summer, the Burcin's (our neighbors from PA) visited us and helped build a foot bridge over a boggy area to the "mighty" Brewster River. The wild flowers and the duck weed seem to like the feature because all are thriving. It is a beautiful and peaceful spot.923247-907825-thumbnail.jpg

June 22

It's the first day of summer. The temperature is about 60 and there are clouds in the sky. Last night there was a thunderstorm that blew through. You know how you can see how far away the lightning was by counting between flash and thunder. Light travels faster than sound so you count 1 one thousand, 2 one thousand, 3 one thousand etc and feel safe. WELL, last evening there was a lightning strike and thunder immediatly, and I do mean IMMEDIATLY. No counting, just flash/bang. It hit up at the Highlander, set off their fire alarm and scared the wits out of me and "the boys". It was something.

Any way, I thought I'd share my latest project - spiffing up the hot tub. It's been power washed and stained. I think it looks stunning. 923247-881580-thumbnail.jpg
Lookin' good!
Check out the previous picture to appreciate the new look.

I'd weed the garden, but it's raining!

June 12 and Lookin' Good!

Lilacs on the side of the house

What an incredible several days. The blue berries are mulched and covered with netting to keep off the birds. The tranplanted rasberries as well the the new ones this year seem to be doing well. We contacted the nursery and replaced three trees that were not leafing out. But the BIG NEWS is - The Landscaping is finished and it looks spectacular.

AND we are eating lettuce and spinach from the lettuce garden by the back porch. WOW!923247-865898-thumbnail.jpg

Did I mention that the potatoes are planted (and covered in an attempt to thwart the potato beetle) and the new strawberries are planted in the new garden and the strawberries planted last year are growing like gang busters! Mmmmmm, I can almost taste the strawberry short cake.

Work continues on the ga/barn. Deborah and I put up the other set of rafters and replaced the trim with a thicker board that will accomodate the siding. 923247-865895-thumbnail.jpg

That's the next big project. -Anybody out there want to help??? Thought I'd get the pictures out so you could see the progress.

Out in the meadow the other night, Deborah spotted a deer. That's nothing new, BUT, this one had a new born fawn with her. Bambi still had its spots. We watched them from upstairs in my office!!!923247-865916-thumbnail.jpg
